Henriette Dachsbeck Nursery School

An ambitious RenoClick project improving energy efficiency and circulation in a central Brussels nursery school

Henriette Dachsbeck école maternelle is comprised of three heritage buildings in the centre of Brussels. The school’s redevelopment was carefully designed to preserve and highlight its existing architecture, enhance energy efficiency, provide an adaptable learning environment and improve overall building circulation.

The project creates a more coherent layout for the school which includes classroom areas, restroom facilities, staff room, administrative and care areas. An updated connection between upper and lower playground areas is proposed, along with restoration of original doors and windows, and reconstructive woodwork based on archival records. Insulation work and photovoltaic solar panels improve thermal conditions and energy efficiency, which is also delivered through heat recovery ventilation and geothermal heating. Low emission materials have been chosen.

A comprehensive study was conducted during the competition phase, and designs comply with O.N.E (Office of Birth and Childhood) regulations for educational facilities; including spatial dimensions, accessibility, fire safety and security, air quality and ventilation, lighting and acoustics.
