Rethinking an early 20th Century house in Munich’s ‘May Beetle’ settlement

Complete renovation and space redesign of a compact end of terrace house with a building footprint of just 29m2, in the 1930s 'May Beetle' settlement in Munich, Germany. The clients, a family with two children, commissioned sophiegreen to extend the liveable space and maximize light, whilst still aligning with the ideals that the garden city was built on.

Four large dormer windows were installed, a gable wall opened with glass double doors to the garden, access created from a new turned wooden staircase, as well as a compact floor plan. Space reconfiguration created two additional bedrooms and a shower room on the upper floors.
